Sclerotherapy is the injection of saline solution into the
"spider veins" in the legs. The saline, which is irritating
to the lining of the vessel, causes the vein to close
(sclerosis) and the debris is carried away by your blood
cells. After the injections, a laser treatment is also done
on the small red vessels (telangietasias) which maximizes
the results of the treatment. Therapeutic compression
stockings are worn for 4 days to one week following the
procedure to keep the veins closed.
A very fine needle is used and generally causes minimal
discomfort. The procedure lasts 15 minutes to 1 hour and
consists of multiple injections. One to three treatments
may be needed in no less than one-month intervals. Most
patients experience an 80% to 95% improvement after one to
three treatments. The thicker, blue vessels require more
treatments than the small red ‘spider’ veins. These
unsightly veins are not necessary for normal circulatory
function.
For best results, aspirin, high doses of anti-inflammatory
agents (e.g. ibuprofen) or high dose Vitamin E (greater
than 100 IU/day) and fish oils should be avoided for 2
weeks prior to and 3-4 weeks after treatment.
Sclerotherapy is the "gold standard" for the treatment of
‘spider veins’. It is the standard by which all other
treatments are measured.
Enjoy the freedom to wear shorts, dresses and bathing suits
without the embarrassment of unsightly "spider veins" on
your legs.
