1) What is
Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the injection of a salt solution into the
small ‘spider’ veins of the legs. A very tiny needle is
used. The salt irritates the vessel and then pressure is
applied to ‘close’ off the vessel. This is followed by
laser treatment of the same vessels. Impacting the vessels
from both the ‘inside’ and the ‘outside’ has greatly
increased the efficacy of this procedure. Compression hose
are put on immediately after the procedure. It is necessary
to keep pressure on the vessels treated for four days.
You will need to wear your stockings - day and night for
that time. Yes, you can shower if you have two pair of
stockings – one to wear in the shower and a dry pair for
after your shower. Our best results have been with people
who wear their stockings faithfully.
2) How long
does it take?
This will depend on how many vessels need to be treated.
Most treatments range from 15 to 30 minutes.
3) Will I have
to repeat the treatment?
For
the larger blue veins, a second treatment may be necessary.
Laser treatment immediately following sclerotherapy has
mostly eliminated the need for repeated treatments.
4) Is there
anything I need to do before I come in for a treatment?
It
is important to come in for a consultation before your
first treatment. You will need to purchase compression
stockings before your treatments begin. Do not take
aspirin, aspirin products, fish oils, ibuprofen, or large
doses of vitamin E (greater than 100 IU/day) for 2 weeks
prior to treatment.
